This past week we had a Cursive Writing Evening at the shop. How fun! We had a little package for each participant with two styles of cursive writing, along with samples for them to pick from to write out—poems, excerpts, and pages from random books on my shelves. People came and sat around our tables and chatted and practised their letters and hung out for a little while.

The team set up the shop and got things organized with lists and cards, and of course everything went so smoothly with the team taking care of it all. On the other hand, I feel like I’m still a bit rusty, maybe even rustier than ever, after Covid, after babies. Did I used to check people out? At some point, years ago, we switched point of sale systems at the front desk and now I’m just clicking around trying to check someone out with a gift card! How does that work, technology having swooped past me, all of a sudden these QR codes to scan and buttons to press on the ipad. I have to call someone to rescue me.

But pens! They stay the same, always and forever. Maybe not forever, there are always new things happening, TWSBI launching a reasonably-priced piston filler pen into the world, some lunatic shop keeper launching inks based on her cats. But the gist of it remains, and I remain with my pens clutched tightly in hand, and enjoying these evenings as they come.
