Last year we began bringing in books for the shop, special ordering books for customers, and having some beautiful calligraphy or art books for browsing in store. Since the quarantine started and library closed, though, I’ve begun scrolling online publishers’ catalogues late into the night, looking for books for Caleb and Naomi, making lists, and in the process discovering some treasures that would be great for the shop.

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been bringing in more and more books: calligraphy books, cursive writing books for kids, books on creativity, writing, and productivity, children’s books.

I’m super excited about seeing these on the website, and there’s more to come! We’ve been getting titles online as things have been coming in. Some titles we carried only in our brick and mortar, and we’ve been slowly adding them to the website. I’ve been holding off on doing a blog post because some titles have been back ordered, and then the ones we did receive sold out before the new ones come in... but we got a few up there now for you to start taking a look it. We’re still tweaking the categories on our website, but for now, you can check out all of our books by going into Accessories and then Books to see some of the categories and titles we have.

For now I thought I’d share some of our most popular calligraphy books.

Molly Suber Thorpe’s Modern Calligraphy covers everything from supplies and techniques in modern calligraphy—it’s more flowing and free form, but still based in technique and developing your own style. Along with instructions and guidelines on creating different strokes and shapes to form letters, the book shows different alphabet scripts and fonts, with lots of colours photographs of samples for different styles and materials.
Lettering for kids! This one is Learn to Letter with Luna the Llama. It has simple alphabets that kids can trace and copy before starting to develop their own style.
This one, Calligraphy for the Beginner by Tom Gourdie, is another classic. This one introduces the fundamentals for italic and broad edge calligraphy, going into proportions and angles, as well as giving lots of exemplars for different scripts.

Lots more to come! Please check back in regularly. I have to admit it’s been a lot of fun looking through all the catalogues, and Jon has been trying to rein me in, but we’re growing as we figure out what people are looking for, as well as trying to offer books you may not have seen or heard of before.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any special requests for topics or kinds of books you’d like to see.
