TWSBI Vac Mini Clear Fountain Pen

An excellent pen that is a delight with which to write. It is small without feeling undersized. Solid without being heavy. Holds A LOT of ink. Way easier to fill, clean, & maintain than I'd expected.

My hands are not small yet the Vac Mini fits surprisingly well. I mostly write unposted, but I find it equally comfortable to post the cap.

It bears repeating, this pen holds a lot of ink, especially when filled from the Vac20 Inkwell. Perfect for when you expect to go a while between fills. Good seals on the cap and the valve at the back also allow you to leave the pen inked for extended lengths of time, trouble free. I’ve yet to find a convenient way to fill from a 2 ml sample vial though.

I’ve had two Vac Minis now for the better part of a year. One with an Extra-Fine nib and the other with a 1.1 mm Stub. The extra-fine flows smooth, solid, and feeds easily even when inked for months at a time. My 1.1 mm stub can get ink starved if I’m writing too swiftly especially when using a dryer ink, but it is beautiful if I take my time. I’ve learned not to fully ink my stub so I can clean it more regularly and (more importantly) swap the inks more frequently.

I got the TWSBI Vac Mini in hopes of having a compact and comfortable fountain pen capable of carrying plenty of ink for extended trips. And in this it has excelled (despite a dearth of extended trips).

The Vac Mini is a nice little pen. If you have an Eco, the first thing you'll notice is that the Vac Mini has considerably more heft to it; not a bad thing though. The size of your hand will ultimately determine if you'll be using this pen posted, or not posted. I have smaller hands so it works just fine not posted.

Given that the is a vac filler, it can be more difficult to clean (though not impossible) than pens that use convertors or pistons. For you, this might be a pen that you dedicate to one of your favourite colours.

I ordered the Vac Mini with a 1.1 stub nib and it's become my go-to pen. I haven't encountered issues with ink starvation that some have noted, but with the stub there's a slight falloff in ink flow after a few lines. Consequently I find myself writing to the pen's rhythm, giving it a moment after each phrase to ensure that the flow is constant. It makes the pen feel alive somehow, as if it's collaborating with me on the construction of my thoughts. A fine or medium nib may not have afforded me such an experience. I love its massive ink capacity, and filling it with the Vac 20A inkwell is straight-up nerd joy. Unscrewing the blind cap and threading the cap to post is not an issue (at least for me) - it becomes part of a minor ritual, so that even a quick note seems to have greater importance. If you want a pen that gets out of the way, the Vac Mini may not be for you. But if you want to bond with your pen and form a deeply one-sided relationship with it, I highly recommend this one.

Pen is short, so I usually post it. I got the extra-fine and fine nib. EF writes like a western EF, and I prefer it for daily writing. The clip rattles slightly.

It's not as smooth as my Pilot VP or Lamy 2000. There's some drag, so I don't press down as hard, and it writes well. The section is long and wide enough to handle. The threads are smooth. It's a perfect weight and balanced capped/uncapped.

Untwist the tail nob if you are writing for long or the ink will not flow freely. I keep it open, unless transporting it. Don't pull the nob out then push back in, or you will get an inky mess.

This and the Vanishing Point are my two go-to pens. I like the faceted design. It holds a large amount of ink, and would be great for trips. The plastic material on the body seems durable.

TWSBI customer service is excellent. They replaced the plastic feeder which fins bent when pulling out to clean. I only had to pay for shipping.
