We recently got some new gel pens in from Pilot. Above, with the white bodies, are the Ilmily pens. And we also have a selection of the Juice Ups, in different colours, as well as in sets.

I brought a bunch of these home from Taiwan, where gel pens and stationery can be found in bookstores and convenience stores everywhere, and as I was on the brink of running out, I needed to get more.

They are lovely! It’s always very satisfying to write with a smooth and even gel pen, and even more satisfying to whip one out from your pocket when the occasion calls for it, and everyone else is shrugging about with their phones.

These ones are particularly nice, as Pilot does have a way with pen bodies as well as super high quality refills. No one does a disposable pen like the Japanese.

We’ve always had the Synergy, which is the North American version of the Japanese Juice/Juice Up. But (of course) the Japanese pens have more colours and more versions, and it’s fun to bring them in. When there’s a trade war and imminent insolvency, the best thing to do is get a small selection of excellent gel pens and scribble away with them.

Gel pens! I’ve been making Mystery Pen Surprises in the shop, both one of my favourite activities (sorting through the various pens, matching them up to create a unique family of six for some unsuspecting pen stranger) and one of my favourite things to sell. I feel like anyone who is willing to take a little stationery adventure in this way is my kind of stationery human. And, I also like to think of these Mystery Pen Surprises as sort of seasonal, in their own way. Perhaps it is apple and pumpkin season in Ontario, but we just got in a bunch of Zebra and Pentel pens in the shop.

Gel pens have a way of accumulating on me. I often pick up one when I come into the shop, a little reward for making it through another day. When we get a new shipment of Uni-balls in, I can’t help but restock my own drawers at home.

This is my TSL pen case for my gel pens, scissors, glue stick, as well as sometimes a fountain pen or two. It’s pretty full, but it is a trusty companion for when I’m waiting around at one of the kids’ activities. It feels very solid in the hand when it’s completely full, but the zipper is very reliable and I love it.

Here is a selection of current favourite gel pens. Some have been long-time favourites, others new to the crew.
