Letter Writing Club on Sunday with a Calligraphy Treat!
It's been another crazy week here, we just had the release of the Hobonichis, and I'm still recovering from Caleb's big day on Monday (he remains completely unaffected). While this is just a reminder that we have our monthly Letter Writing Club this Sunday, September 13th, from 2-4 pm, it's also to let you know that for this Sunday, we have a special visit from a local Toronto calligrapher!
Calligrapher Salman Khattak has very generously offered his time to address letters for us! He does everything from gothic to italic to copperplate to uncial, and even arabic calligraphy. For those of you that can't make it out, I will try to take some photos of the envelopes, and maybe even some video of him in action!
You can see Salman's work on Instagram and on his blog. He also makes some beautiful nib holders, which are sometimes for sale. I can't even imagine the amount of work that goes into making each one of these. Salman made a joke that his blog is neglected, but I hope he will post more soon! I really enjoyed reading through the descriptions and photos of his process in creating pieces, some of which are pretty complex. It's that really wonderful combination of inspiration and the depressing realization that I have the hands of a gorilla. I also really liked the blog post with the photos from his Arabic Calligraphy Workshop at the University of Toronto. This is exactly what my students looked like during the Children's Handwriting Workshop ;) Even if you don't need your addresses all fancied up on your envelope, I hope you'll come out this Sunday for an afternoon of coffee, egg tarts and letter writing. I always really look forward to time to just enjoy some letter writing - no worrying about the laundry or vacuuming! - and also especially some time to chat with you all :)
