It's Labour Day today, the last holiday of the summer, and of course the heralding of the new school year tomorrow. I hope you're all ready, students, parents and teachers! But even if you're not going back to school, I hope you had a restful and fun long weekend. For us, though, we've got extra reason to celebrate: this Labour Day happens to be September 7th, Caleb's birthday - he is officially one year old! There's been, um, a few cakes, and a few presents, but also just a celebration of a happy and healthy and beautiful kid. It's hard to believe that it's been one year since Caleb came roaring into our lives, maybe because most days it seems like he hasn't stopped. Having Caleb has been a little like starting this business - if we had truly known the real risk and the hard work and trials I think we may have been scared off completely, but having been foolhardy enough to do both, we couldn't imagine it any other way. It's both a bit of mourning that Caleb's babyhood is over, but also of course a celebration of his having reached one year, and us having kept a baby alive and laughing (most of the time) for a year. It truly takes a village to raise a child, and all of you who have supported our family business over these few years have been the reason our family has food on the table and a certain one of us has diapers on his bottom.

Thanks so much! He’s a pretty happy kid, and sometimes he’s laughing at his own jokes, but then sometimes…I think he’s laughing at me!! :)

Haha! Jon said I should only have one candle, but I couldn’t help putting a few more on! It’s a celebration, right ;)
Caleb is already walking, so the next step will be sweeping the shop! :)

Haha! No, he only had a bite of the chocolate cake! A bit too young for so much sugar, but it won’t be long now :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CALEB
You will soon be ready to assume the position as CEO of Wonder Pens.
I see you have seven candles for your first birthday party.
Quite appropriate for a V.I.P.
I hope next year you bring along a fire extinguisher.
Enjoy that scrumptious looking chocolate cake.
Keep smiling, Caleb.

Happy Birthday Caleb!

Did mommy and daddy get a good picture of you with chocolate icing ALL over?

(My goodness, I can’t believe you gave him chocolate at his age… Maybe it is carob instead, not chocolate.)

Congratulations!
Just out of curiosity, how much cake did Caleb actually ingest? As I recall, at that age most foods end up in random external locations rather than into the mouth.
