This is a great pencil for daily use, notes, writing, math.
I prefer this pencil over the regular 9800 since the "naked" pencil allows for a better grip. The graphite is hard, strong and keeps a point.
The HB of the 9000 and Uni-Star are still smoother writers, but I can keep writing for longer with the 9800 EW purely because of the finish. I also love the look where you can see the joined wood at different points in each pencil because of the recycled wood, but the dark green of the regular 9800 looks great too. The wood doesn't sharpen as clean as the other Mitsubishi pencils, but it's a very small difference.
It's a great daily no-nonsense pencil if you want a strong HB grade. I find the B writes a little smoother but wears out faster. I don't know why, but the 9800 series feels better on cheaper/softer paper too.
