One of the oldest pen ink companies in the world, J. Herbin is a French ink company dating back to 1670. One of the first companies to establish a diverse set of colours, their rectangular bottles with a pen rest have become classic among fountain pen users. Considered to smooth-flowing and quick-drying, this is a great ink for new fountain pen writers, for the office or for your personal journalling.

Available in gris nuage, bleu pervenche, rouge caroubier, lierre sauvage, lie de the, poussiere de lune, orange indien, rose cyclamen, Perle Noire, and eclat de saphir.

It Has its Uses

While the colour itself is a beautiful purple-toned grey, it's far too pale for writing on anything other than pure white paper. I personally enjoy using it for sketching or other artistic purposes. It does indeed shade, though not as much as I personally would like. Order a sample before ordering a bottle.

Not suitable for writing

As pretty as this soft grey is, it's utterly unusable for writing. It's completely illegible. It would be good for sketching and shading.

I gave it two stars because I bought it with the intention of writing with is, but it's by no means a bad ink. It has good flow and lubrication as with all J. Herbin ink. Just be aware that if you want a grey for writing, this isn't the one.
