NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Rich with dark and light, pain and magic, The Inconvenient Indian distills the insights gleaned from Thomas King's critical and personal meditation on what it means to be "Indian" in North America, weaving the curiously circular tale of the relationship between non-Natives and Natives in the centuries since the two first encountered each other. In the process, King refashions old stories about historical events and figures, takes a sideways look at film and pop culture, relates his own complex experiences with activism, and articulates a deep and revolutionary understanding of the cumulative effects of ever-shifting laws and treaties on Native peoples and lands.
This is a book both timeless and timely, burnished with anger but tempered by wit, and ultimately a hard-won offering of hope--a sometimes inconvenient but nonetheless indispensable account for all of us, Indian and non-Indian alike, seeking to understand how we might tell a new story for the future.

5 stars!

During the pandemic I vowed to learn things I was never taught and understand the People around me. I have enjoyed learning about Indigenous People, Turtle Island and who founded Canada. As I watched the horror of Residential schools being brought to light I wondered why had I never heard about this or been taught this in history? We have a lot of Canadian secrets and this book gives a whole other side to our founders that we have never been taught. I am making a choice to educate myself and learn and it has been eye opening. This book is filled with heart, new knowledge and information and wonderfully written. A must read!

An excellent read

I didn't purchase this through Wonderpens, but felt I had to write a review for this wonderful book. I enjoyed the audiobook of this during the summer, and I learned a lot that I didn't know about how Indigenous peoples in North America (Turtle Island) have been consistently betrayed and harmed by colonialism and, let's face it, white people. This book will teach you something new, guaranteed!
