I have two new pens in hand, and they have been companions on this journey to start the new year. Two matching pens! Are they sisters? Naiads? Witches? All of the above, wandering through the house like borrowers. I myself wish to be a borrower, but in the words of Agatha Swanburne: Complaining doesn’t butter the biscuit.

They’re the new Mini Pocket Pens from Opus 88 in Taiwan.

At the end of 2024, Opus 88 released the Hugging Mini Pocket Pen and I immediately knew I needed one. Immediately! Something about this pen just called out to me. Jon just ordered the one for me so we could see it first, and Kelly from Opus 88, of course, sent two. A complete delight, this little mini pen with a hug on it. A clear barrel for the dark pool of ink to slosh around in.

And then! There was another! I couldn’t believe it. A flying rabbit. My goodness, the end of the year was full of gifts.

I dared to ask if there would be a third, and alas it was not to be, but I will take my two and they will remain hidden in the warren of my drawers and tucked away in my bag for adventures to pick up the children from school.

Kelly shared how much work went into getting the illustrations by artist Soupy Tang just exactly right on the pen. I think it’s one of those things that I can conceptually appreciate on a logical level, but I know there’s so much that went into these pens that I can’t even imagine. I think they turned out incredible and I love them both.

You fill the barrel of the pen with ink (there’s an included eyedropper, or you can use a syringe), so it holds quite a bit of ink.

In any case, they are here! With me. Two sisters ready for adventure.

There are times in life when a pen (or two) just call out to you, and I’m so pleased to have these two in my pen case with me. In life and in pen shops, there are serious pens and unserious pens. I wouldn’t say that these two fit in either category, which is just perfect.

Life really is too short to not have fun.
