We're hiring again! Our studio shop's renovations are coming along nicely, and Jon's keeping his fingers crossed for another few pieces to fall into place this week. I already have some more photos to share, along with a few updates, so please stay tuned. With that in mind, we're hiring both a studio manager and a full-time associate. Read more for details on each position.   Studio Manager We're looking for someone to work full time and take the lead in our studio shop. Passionate about slowing down and writing by hand, excited by a fresh notebook, and most of all, eager to welcome and help fellow stationery friends find just the right supplies. - super organized, and able to keep track of inventory and long to-do lists, and juggle on the go projects. - detail-oriented in making sure tasks are done correctly and accurately, for example when someone wants a pen a certain way, or when we're setting up the shop. - an eye for creating beautiful displays and making our products look their best. - energetic and a self-starter - our studio shop is going to be small, and it may mean working independently for part of the day. We want someone who can take initiative and work hard. - good with people - getting to know our customers is really important to being able to help them find what they're looking for. - enjoys teaching - we get a lot of customers who are looking to buy their first fountain pen, and we want to teach them about all of their options and make sure they find the right one. Responsibilities include: - opening and closing the shop - answering the phone and emails - receiving and organizing inventory and new merchandise for display - general shop upkeep (sweeping, dusting, etc.) - greeting and helping customers - communicating and coordinating with our main shop - providing great customer service and troubleshooting with any pen problems Bonus: - able to keep our shop cat in line You don't have to know anything about fountain pens to begin with (we'll teach you!) but we're looking for someone who understands the feeling of finding a pen that you just love writing with. We will also accept pencil nerds. Our ideal studio manager is looking to grow with us, and take on more and more responsibility, with opportunities in social media, coordinating events (like our booth at the Toronto Pen Show, or events at our shop), website management, photography, and more, depending on their strengths.   Full-Time Associate We're looking for a full-time associate who will be working in both the main and studio shops, and someone who would like to stay and grow with us. Passionate about slowing down and writing by hand, excited by a fresh notebook, and most of all, eager to welcome and help fellow stationery friends find just the right supplies. - energetic, flexible and ready to lend a hand where needed. - detail-oriented in making sure tasks are done correctly and accurately, for example when someone wants a pen a certain way, or when we're setting up the shop. - good with people - getting to know our customers is really important to being able to help them find what they're looking for. - strong teamwork skills Responsibilities: - working in the shop front to help customers find what they're looking for - general shop upkeep (sweeping, dusting, etc.) - shipping operations and order fulfillment - ware house organization and inventory - answering the phone or emails You don't have to know anything about fountain pens to begin with (we'll teach you!) but we're looking for someone who understands the feeling of finding a pen that you just love writing with. We will also accept pencil nerds.   For both positions, you can send your resume and cover letter in to info@wonderpens.ca, or drop it off in the shop.

We made it back from our week at the cottage, about which I'd like to write a blog post, but I'm still recovering. It's funny how going to the cottage and returning back to the city both feel like emerging from caves, albeit caves of very different sorts - one the cave of overwhelming busy-ness and holiday rush, and the other the cave of isolation and potential cabin fever. We got home and unpacked the car. Super trotted around sniffing for ghosts and vandals, Chicken stretched and lounged in the middle of the floor. I watered plants, Jon got rid of the Christmas tree, Caleb had a tearful moment at the thought of recycling his paper Christmas chain. Home again. While a week at the cottage breathing in the fresh (and extremely chilly) air was wonderful, as we embark on the new year I can't help but feel like I've started off on the wrong foot, a little in disarray as I try to sort out laundry and remaining groceries and get back into a routine. I really like the notion of hitting the ground running - blog posts posting! photos! new ideas! projects! emails! - but I'm a bit behind on my blast-off start (and basically everything else). Thank goodness the industrial furnace is keeping the air in our apartment in a constant state of excessive dryness, so as to help our laundry air dry faster. In any case, I'm slowly sifting through pens and notebooks and cases on my desk as I ponder my to-do list for this first week of 2018. My big plans are to survive the week with Caleb at home before he returns to preschool on Monday. He's enthusiastic about going out into the arctic freeze in his snow suit, and I'm slightly less so as it means bundling up the baby and standing out there myself.

Today, while I was at work, my sister stole my iPad and tested to see if it can survive a 30 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My apple ipad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share it with someone!

Good blog! I truly love how it is simple on my eyes and the data are well written. I’m wondering how I could be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your RSS which must do the trick! Have a nice day!

Thanks for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do a little research on this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such excellent info being shared freely out there.

So how many people took a fountain pen and nice quality paper to write out their resume and cover letter?

wonderpens

wonderpens said:

Actually not too many, I don’t think – although quite a few people signed their cover letter and made note of the pen and ink :)

Good luck with the renos. I do have to get into the shop sometime. Delivery is convenient, but you have too many things I want to hold for real.

I do hope you open a shop in the west end (I’m in Mississauga).

If I lived in canada I would apply for one of these in a heartbeat. It does make me think about my skillset though, and how I may be looking in the wrong places for work. If any smaller retailer operates like this at all I’d be delighted with my job.
Hope you have many fantastic people to choose from!
